Tom Scott is planning a Miracle Fruit Party at the Hackspace.

What
There's a type of berry called "miracle fruit", and I'm getting freezedried tablets of it. Roll 'em around on your tongue, and all the sour and bitter receptors are numbed for about half an hour. Lemons taste sweet. Tabasco sauce tastes like "hot doughnut glaze". Believe me - it's a hell of a thing. More details are, of course, on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synsepalum_dulcificum - and a gushing New York Times writeup of what a miracle fruit party is like is here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/dining/28flavor.html

Pending the mailing list's consensus: I'm planning it for a maximum of 20 people, in the quiet room, with the cost at £5 a head. That'd include a large miracle fruit tablet each and plenty of food (including lemons and limes), plus non-alcoholic drinks and a pack of antacid tablets for afterwards. (You'll need them.)

When
Tentatively being planned for a trip for a Sunday in June. Add your vote for a date here:

Where
In the quiet room.

How
£5 a head, payable in advance to Tom so he can buy miracle fruit tablets and enough food.

What?
Not sure (details to follow 18-04-11) but generally a tour of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. As well as the Diamond Light source (most likely not on this trip) RAL contains ISIS a muon/neutron source, CLF (the central laser facility) as well as all sorts of cool workshops (they're constructing bits of ALMA here).

Where?
Near Didcot, Oxfordshire (the same location as the Diamond light source trip)

Why?
um....
CLF (LASERS!)
ISIS (Neutron/Muon beam!)
ALMA (Radio Telescope!)
This not enough? you're not human...

When?
9th June 2011, exact time TBC

Getting there
As well as who ever ends up driving there it's a fairly easy, 40 min, train journey from Paddington and then 20 minute bus directly to RAL (or Harwell campus as the buses know it).
newsflash A 4-tank unit (with wash baths and a sink) is due to be auctioned on thursday 17th march. Maybe we could buy it and install it in place of the unit 23 sink ? Don't know what it will go for but I suggest not very much compared with new equipment .. maybe £30 to £150. --Artag 14:26, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Link for auction mentioned above is here.
It appears there may be a delay in getting a new account approved for bidding.

People on the mailing list (thread) seem to have reached a rough consensus to bid on it. Next up is to decide on how much to offer, this comes down to if we think it is a functional unit or if it might need spare parts (realistically we will be happy if the bubble etch works). (I havn't got time for the mailing list right now, you can use my £25 quid however you want, I'm thinking in the region of bidding £180 on it but whatever. ajp

While you can use a bowl and slosh enchant around, it is much better to use a bubble etch tank. It etches faster and, evenly.
