London Hackspace's current laser cutter has served us very well over the last four years. It's consistently one of the most popular and most useful tools in the space and it's gained us a lot of members.

However, it's not without faults: the tube (and the power supply) still lasts for a significantly shorter time than it should, it's often a complete pain to maintain, and in some respects it's showing its age. The quality of imported laser cutters has improved substantially over the last few years. Not to mention that these days we can probably find space for something a little bit more substantial.

We'd like to buy a new Silvertail A0 laser cutter from Just Add Sharks.

Just Add Sharks is a fairly new company formed by two guys from the UK Hackspace scene who wanted to import good-quality laser cutters into the UK. They're no strangers to using laser cutters in a Hackspace environment, and they've already put some of their machines in a number of other UK spaces. We've seen their machines in person and they are much nicer laser cutters than what we currently have.

The spec of the Silvertail is:

* 1200x900mm cutting area (our current machine is 560x300mm)
* 80 Watt laser tube (our current machine is 40W)

In addition, this machine has the following major improvements in quality over our current laser cutter:

* A Reci laser tube and power supply - the closest you can get to a high quality name brand while still being a Chinese import.
* Through-bed fume extraction, which results in cleaner cuts.
* Well-made, counter-sprung mirror mounts, which make re-aligning the laser a lot easier.
* Gas struts on the lid so it doesn't hit you on the head every so often.
* Many other minor improvements.

The controller and software on the Silvertail is the same MPC6515/LaserCut 5.3 combination as we have on our current laser cutter. Seemingly this is the only thing which hasn't changed in the last four years, but at least we know it works and existing users are familiar with it.

Cost
The cost of this machine is £6150. We are happy to match 50% of this amount from the London Hackspace budget, so we need to raise £3075 through pledges.

The Staubli Robot Arm needs a controller to robot and a power cable.

News
* Pledge paid, parts ordered

The Item (original pledge)
On 7 June 2013 we got an industrial grade Staubli robot arm. The reason we got it is because the donor, Queen Mary's University no longer had the cable for it and got quoted over £3k to replace it.
We have been in contact with Staubli and managed to reduce the cost and the best we managed to get was the following

The discounted price for the cable is £2,025.75 + Delivery.

It comes with an engineer and full test of the robot.

It also comes sale or return, but return will incur a restocking fee of £675.75 as we need to deal with Paris, not the UK.

Yep folks, that's over £2k for a cable. The alternative is for us to make our own! Paddy has managed to get a list of all the parts and the cost should be around £294.76 + a lot of soldering, crimping and patience. It's important to note that even if we make the cable all correctly there is no guarantee the robot will work but the donor assured us it was working fine before the cable was misplaced. There are at least 3 of us who really want to get the robot working and are willing to put the effort in as it's an amazing piece of kit with +-0.02mm tolerance for the end effector! i.e. it can be used for a lot of uses including:

* 3D printing (maybe even similar to mataerial)
* 3D sculpting
* precision drilling (e.g. PCBs)
* pick and place machine for SMT components
* stirring your tea

What
Bob's Rigol DS1052E - see https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/london-hack-space/xVia1vrydQo

1GSa/s 50MHz 8 bit 2-channel with 1 megasample storage. FFT, USB.

(storage and sampling shared over 2 channels, so 500MSa/s 500k samples in 2 channel mode)

Why?
We have a number of oscilloscopes but only one offers storage, the Philips PM3365A. Technology has moved on a long way from this early model and current devices are much more capable and easier to use. The Rigol range are well known as good and economical, and Bob is offering this current model at about half the retail price.

I don't suggest getting rid of the other oscilloscopes if this pledge is successful - the Philips will probably be little used but the analogue scopes (especially the Tektronix) remain very useful. Their traditional interfaces are fast and intuitive and their displays show how both digital and analog scopes can present misleading information.

Note : Bob's intention was to ebay this if he didn't get a buyer. However, I have bought it from him, so the pledge remains open and it can be bought from me instead if it succeeds. (I'm not donating the whole cost, sorry!) --Artag 12:54, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Hacking
It's widely known that this oscilloscope can be hacked to operate to the same spec as the 100Mhz DS1102E model. The hack involves downgrading to earlier firmware, executing some (subsequently disabled) remote control commands, and then upgrading again. There is a small, but not insignificant possibility of bricking, and also the possibility, not guaranteed, of recovering the bricking.

There is evidence that the modification is actually worthwhile : there is some programmable control of the front end which does indeed raise the bandwidth. The 1GSa/s limit is not changed, of course, but the display permits a higher maximum scan rate. Since the 1GSa/s limit is over both channels, this is only really useful in single channel mode : Despite Nyquist's theorum, in 2-channel mode the 500MSa/s sample rate is only really enough for 50MHz (10x bandwidth is usually the rule for reasonable fidelity on current DSOs). This is especially true of FFT mode.

There may be some uses for the DSO which would make this worth doing. However, it's at the limit of operation, and many needs for higher bandwith don't also require storage. If you have a need for 100MHz, note that we have an excellent, working, 275MHz HP1725A. This will do a far better job unless you have a simultaneous need for the storage or maths capabilities. Please seek the permission of the people who paid for the instrument before taking the (relatively low) risk involved in modifying it.
UPDATE 8 Dec 2013 - PLEDGE CLOSED - Thanks for a successful pledge everyone! We've now got a great selection of tools available for woodworking. Now we just need to use them...

We are looking at purchasing a set of basic woodworking tools for the space for use in the weekly PL(A)YWOOD sessions.

The idea is to build a basic starting toolset that allows a group of people to come together and 'do' woodwork every week.

The current portfolio of tools in the workshop are not sufficient to get us started, so I've put together this pledge to enable us to begin.

Discussion of the pledge is open on the PL(A)YWOOD forum .

Pledge opened: Saturday 17th November 2013

The item
* http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140626381317 (or equiv)
* The PCB Reflow Oven is used to solder surface mount components on to a PCB. Small surface mount components are very difficult to solder by hand. A reflow oven allows you to stick the components to the board with solder paste, then heat the board up in the oven, which melts the solder and fixes the component. Using the oven also means all the connections are molten at the same time, and surface tension pulls the components into alignment, delivering a better quality PCB than could never me achieved with hand soldering. The oven can also be used to reflow existing boards. Sometimes board acquires a fault after a while, and reflowing the components sometimes fixes this. Using a professional oven also means the temperature of the oven follows the recommended temperature path, for both lead and lead free solders. Although a domestic oven can be used to reflow boards, you do not have the same level of control over the temperature gradient.

Budget estimation
* There are a large number of Chinese origin ovens on FleaBay, some members have had success with. All the ads seem to be for the same model. See FleaBay link above.
* I suggest we purchase a T962A. They are about £300 delivered.

Specification
* The T692A is 1,500W and has a PCB area of about 300 × 320 mm.
* It has 8 different built in temperature wave forms, for different types of solder paste and is fan assisted for even heat distribution.
* (not to be confused with the T962, which is only 800w, and 180 x 235 mm)

Additional information
* I'm sure we could hack one with an Arduino and Toaster Oven, but it wouldn't have the same features and someone needs to build it.

* Many other minor improvements.

The controller and software on the Silvertail is the same MPC6515/LaserCut 5.3 combination as we have on our current laser cutter. Seemingly this is the only thing which hasn't changed in the last four years, but at least we know it works and existing users are familiar with it.

Cost
The cost of this machine is £6000. We are happy to match 50% of this amount from the London Hackspace budget, so we need to raise £3000 through pledges.

What is it?
A sublimation printer is basically an Inkjet printer with sublimation dye and paper replacing the normal stuff, this means that the printed work can be heat pressed onto mugs, ceramics, metals and plastics.

It can also print onto polyester (100%) and other synthetic fabrics, but not natural fabrics. For natural fabrics we would need another system for heat-transfer ink as replacing the inks between jobs isn't really an option.

Why the hell do we need ANOTHER printer?
More t-shirts! Currently our designs are limited to vector drawings, with the colours limited by what t-shirt vinyl we can source (and that stuffs expensive too!). Having a sublimation printer will allow us to print any standard raster artwork without the need to buy specific supplies for each design.

Will also print on mugs, most other ceramics, plastics, and flat metals (Basically, anything that can withstand being heated in a press)

Where will it live?
Probably around the arts and crafts area. Due to the external ink resoviour it should be moved as infrequently as possible. It's USB so designs can be loaded by laptop. Alternativly this can also live over by Tesla and the vinyl cutter to allow printing from a publicly accessible machine. People should be aware not to accidentally print on it though as the supplies for it are exceedingly more expensive.

What do we need?
Epson Stylus XP-30 bundle - This will give us everything we need to start sublimation printing apart from the paper. This includes:
* Epson Stylus XP-30 printer
* Continuous Ink System
* 400ml of Sublimation inks
*Necessary gubbins

What do we need to keep it going?
Ink: Specifically sublimation ink. The printer has four colours of ink (Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow) that come in bottles ranging from 100ml to 1l, and can cost anywhere up to £80 per bottle. It's expensive, but it will last a long time. the 4 100ml bottles convert to about 80 cartridges worth of ink

Paper: To get the ink to sublimate you need to use special paper. A4 sublimation paper costs around £10 to £15 for 100 sheets

How much will it cost?
* £104.10 - Epson printer bundle

I kind of guessed using paintbrushes to be self explanatory but for those who don't know how to clean them, here's a small guide:-

Acrylics
* Don't dip the brush right into the paint, it ruins the bristles, the paint should never get close to the ferrule (the metal ring)
* Use a glass jar to wash them (there is one in the paint area), you can beat them about inside vigorously without worrying about it tipping over
* Don't just wave them about in the water, be vigorous, make sure the brush is thoroughly cleaned.
* Don't grind the brush against the bottom of the jar, this will instantly fuck it.
* Don't leave the brush in the water at all ever ever ever, once you stop cleaning it take it out and lie it flat or stand it up in the brush stand with the bristles up, if you leave it in the water the bristles will become squashed and it will make the brush useless.

Enamels
* Same as above, but use white spirit instead of water, then wash the white spirit off with warm soapy water
IF THERE IS NO WHITE SPIRIT THEN DON'T USE ENAMELS!

Oils
* Use the appropriate thinner/turps instead of water, then wash the turps off with warm soapy water
Again, don't have thinner/turps? Don't use oils.

Warning
* Certain types of paint thinner react with some plastic containers so always use glass jars with paint thinners when washing. You don't want it melting on you while you're using it.

Also, think on the job you're doing, is it something rough? Use one of the crappier brushes, that way when people come to do nice detailed things the nice brushes will be usable.
Fuxyhttps://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/w/index.php?title=Guides/Paintbrushes&diff=36188Guides/Paintbrushes2013-06-24T08:40:10Z
Fuxy:

How about "Don't do anything dodgy. Avoid getting the space on junk mail lists."?
It will help if your full name is on your personal box so your delivery of components can be thrown in your box instead of lost in the general clutter someone in the space.

Details of items delivered to the space for specific individuals, or items expected to arrive at the space.

We should perhaps describe here the policy for sending post to the space - do we have one?

How about "Don't do anything dodgy. Avoid getting the space on junk mail lists."?

It will help if your full name is on your personal box so your delivery of components can be thrown in your box instead of lost in the general clutter someone in the space.

See also Guides/Bringing_items_to_the_space if you are considering getting anything big delivered. If you get something huge delivered, such as a fruit machine, it may get scrapped if you have not informed the mailing list, labeled it and got it out of peoples way pronto.
It will help if your full name is on your personal box so your delivery of components can be thrown in your box instead of lost in the general clutter someone in the space.

The people at unit 22 arrive around 9AM, we have occasionally accepted early morning deliveries for them. If nobody is going to be around to give it to them it may be better to suggest the delivery person leaves it with the security guard at the business center entrance.
