‘All the sounds are out there … we just need to find them’

Hackoustic are workshops held at the London Hackspace – located at the heart of London’s East end. The objective is to explore the physicality of sound, using a wider scope of media and practices. We thrive to redefine the meaning of the traditional instrument, by integrating 21st century technologies, modern philosophy of design, an understanding of vibration and a realisation of the timbral and tonal limitations of current traditional electronic and acoustic instruments.

Attending the workshops is free of charge, and with increasing amount of dedicated members, a certain level of trust arises. It opens opportunities for collaborative research, projects whilst learning through discovery. In such heavily mathematical and theory-based field, it is necessary to develop fundamental understanding through practical and hands-on experience with the help of others. It paves the way for a cross-disciplinary journey that is not solely constricted to the field of acoustics, but rather across a multitude of practices such as Art, Engineering, Philosophy and Design.

Join us on this adventure to explore this world of vibrations on Every last Sunday of the Month at the Hackspace!

Hackoustic is a hacking group dedicated to exploring acoustics and instrument building. We meet on the second and last Sundays of every month at the London Hackspace to experiment with sound and try to build whatever sound making machines we can imagine. Sometimes we invite speakers who come and talk about their projects or tell us about a subject that might be of helpful in our explorations. The emphasis is definitely on experimenting and having fun, although many of our members are serious musicians/sound-artists/entrepreneurs.

We are also keen on evangelising to the wider world about the joys of hacking and experimenting with sound, as well as promoting our members projects. We have appeared at [http://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-modern Tate Modern], the [http://www.vam.ac.uk/ V&A], [http://www.cafeoto.co.uk/ Cafe Oto], the [http://makerfaireelephantandcastle.com/ Elephant and Castle Maker Faire] and more in order to do just that.

We now hold a locker at the space for access for any member with Audio generally. In order to get introduced to the Kit available and accessibility, pop to our monthly meetup or contact us on the email below.

Our group welcomes anyone, from any background, and with any level of experience. If you have an idea for a brand new instrument, but don’t know where to start, you may find the ideal person to point you in the right direction. Or perhaps you’ve built an instrument, but want to figure out how to make it make more interesting music with it. Maybe you’ll find a composer or musician here who can give you exactly what you need. Maybe you just want to hit a few things with a stick and make some cool sounds. That’s one of our favourite pass-times!

We are also a great way to find out about the Hackspace. This place is full of people with all sorts of expertise and is a great place to learn new skills and meet interesting people. It isn’t necessary to pay the (ver reasonable) Hackspace membership fee to come to our meetings but hopefully you’ll be inspired to join the Hackspace and make full use of all the resources. There really isn’t anywhere else quite like it!

About Us

‘All the sounds are out there … we just need to find them’

We have appeared at Tate Modern, the V&A, Cafe Oto, the Elephant and Castle Maker Faire and more in order to do just that.
