To get the exported .dxf file to import at the correct size into the laser cutter software, the "Artwork Scale" in the .dxf options must be set to "1 Inch = 1 Unit".
To get text to import properly into the laser cutter software, the text must first be expanded, Object menu -> Expand. Then the word must be ungrouped.
