## Examples

### Example Question 1:

(a) ^{3}/_{4} +^{ 1}/_{3} = ?

(b)^{ 1}/_{2} − ^{3}/_{8} = ?

**Answers:** (a) 1 ^{1}/_{12 }, (b) ^{1}/_{8}

**Explanations: **

(a) Make the denominators the same by changing them to twelfths: ^{3}/_{4} (× 3) = ^{9}/_{12 , }^{1}/_{3}_{ }(× 4) = ^{4}/_{12 }→ ^{9}/_{12 } + ^{4}/_{12 = }^{13}/_{12 }→ 1 ^{1}/_{12}

(b) Make the denominators the same by changing the ½ to eighths: ^{4} ⁄_{8} − ^{3}⁄_{8} = ^{1}/_{8}

### Example Question 2:

(a)^{ 4}/_{5} × ^{2}/_{3} = ?

(b)^{ 8}/_{9} ÷ ^{2}/_{3} = ?

**Answers:** (a)^{ 8}/_{15 }, (b) 1^{ 1}/_{3}

**Explanations: **

(a) To multiply fractions you just multiply across the numerators and then do the same with the denominators: 4 × 2 = 8 and 5 × 3 = 15 → ^{8}/_{15}

(b) To divide fractions you keep the first fraction the same, invert the second fraction and multiply instead of divide: ^{8}/_{9} ×^{ 3}/_{2 }= ^{24}/_{18} simplify → 1 ^{1}/_{3}

### Example Question 3:

What is ^{5}/_{8} of 416?

**Answer:** 260

**Explanation:** Find ^{1}/_{8} by dividing 416 by 8 = 52, then multiply this by 5 to find ^{5}/_{8}
