There are various sorts of drill bits made especially for wood, because it's soft and easy to cut. If they're used for metal, they'll go blunt very quickly indeed. Wood drills can be flat, in a spade shape. Or they can be a big coarse spiral with a tiny woodscrew thing at the tip. Or they can be cylindrical and short, also with a central pip or screw. Metal drills are simple spirals, and can also be used for wood.
