Joining
To become a member of the London Hackspace, please complete the sign-up form and setup a standing order. The sign-up process will provide you with all the information you'll need.
Note that it's not unusual for payments to take a few days to appear in our account once the money has left your own. Furthermore, our system only reconciles new accounts once a day.
How much
We ask that you pay what you think the space is worth to you. Running an organisation like this in London isn't cheap, so please be as generous as you can.
The minimum subscription is £5/month. The space requires our members to contribute an average subscription of £20/month to survive.
What you get
The following benefits are available to members of the London Hackspace. Currently you will need to ask someone familiar with the process (or one of the directors) to set them up for you after your first standing order payment has been received. The benefits are not provided automatically so you will need to ask.
Karma
- You're helping to finance the London Hackspace. (Have a look at our Budget to see how much it costs to run it; rent in London is incredibly expensive.)
Physical
- 24/7 access to the space using an RFID card of your choosing with our door entry system.
- Personal storage at the Hackspace.
- Discounted rates on selected events and workshops.
- A warm glow in your heart for actively contributing to the London Hacking community.
Accounts
- Ops on the London Hackspace IRC channel.
- A user account on Babbage - a general usage server that lives in the space.
- Administrator privileges and captcha-free editing on the Wiki (You need to link your accounts here.)
- Commit access on the Github account
- Graph management access on Cacti.
Permissions
- Send DMs to tweet from @londonhackspace
- Add events to the calendar
Other
- A picture of your beautiful self on our members page.
- A new God to worship.
- Membership discounts with some suppliers available.
Things to do
- Please actively help to keep the space tidy - if everyone chips in a bit with the cleaning the space will stay shiny!
- Please contribute to the news, it is "published" every Wednesday, ish. You can find the latest draft page here.
Storage
London Hackspace members are allocated one plastic box in for storage of personal items. Your personal box can be considered 'off-limits' to other members and visitors - within reason. In certain circumstances you may be able to store items outside of your personal box.
Please don't take a box if you don't intend to use it or, if you empty your box please return it to the stack. Space is limited and if/when we run out of boxes empty boxes are considered fair game (if you take the last box please tell the list so we can order more).
Storage boxes must be labelled with the member's name and should be left in the dirty shop storage area.
It goes without saying that the space should not be held responsible for any items left in your personal box.
Box specifications:
- Dimensions (H × W × D)
- Maximum external dimensions: 260 mm × 360 mm × 460 mm
- Maximum usable internal rectangular volume: 235 mm × 275mm × 310 mm (46% of external dimensions! sub-optimal)
- Volume: 30 L
- The item: BigDug, VUB30
Shelving specifications:
- Approximate dimensions (W × D): 900 mm × 450 mm
- SketchUp model
