Not Just Arduino 8th April

Update on the ShrimpingIt workshop

Workshop rescheduled to 9th May 7PM due to Hackspace moving to a new space.

New Hackspace

As we're moving the Hackspace, over the course of this week we need:

• lots of crates and rigid boxes we can borrow for 1-2 weeks
• lots of help packing things into these boxes

And on 13/14 April:

• people with vans and other means of transport (the new space is not far from the old space)
• a few good people who know the space, can think on their feet, and are available to guide volunteers
• many, many helping hands for the actual move
• trolleys, skates, and other means of moving heavy things

Electromagnetic Wave

When Sunday May 5th (a bank holiday weekend). Talks will run from midday until early evening, and we're planning entertainment aboard the Stubnitz late into the night. Impromptu side-events are likely to occur all weekend.

Electromagnetic Wave is a day filled with talks and workshops for those with an inquisitive mind or an interest in making things, held on a converted East German fishing vessel moored in London. Brought to you by the non-profit group behind last year's Electromagnetic Field festival

All proceeds from Electromagnetic Wave will be split between keeping our amazing venue afloat and helping us get next year's Electromagnetic Field on the road; both Stubnitz and EMF are non-profit organisations.

Last year at EMF we heard talks spanning subjects from genetic modification to electronics, blacksmithing to high-energy physics, reverse engineering to lock picking, crocheting to computer security, and drones to lolcats. Electromagnetic Wave will cover similar territory, but the talks have yet to be finalised; submit a presentation and you could find yourself on stage in the cargo hold!

Get Involved We're still looking for people to talk at EMF, as well as for people to run workshops, installations, or simply show off things they've made on the ship or ashore. If you're interested in doing any of this, please fill in the form and we'll get back to you.

Hackday for accessible music

On Sunday 21st April  Drake Music will run a hackday to create and share new instruments that break down disabling barriers to music making. If you want to get involved contact Martin: martin AT rebel-it DOT com

Hardware Freedom Day

Hardware Freedom Day will take place on April 20th 2013 all over the world. HFD is a worldwide event to support open hardware. For the all day, events will take place around the world to raise awareness to Open Hardware projects and communities. and It is supported by the charity Digital Freedom Foundation and started in 2012.

In London: Chip Hack from 10am to 4pm with an Introduction to FPGA Programming with 2 days of workshops.

OSHUG25

This 25th event marks the third anniversary, and will feature a talk on writing embedded firmware and a panel discussion that will explore the future of open source hardware. On the 18th April 2013, 18:00 - 20:00 at C4CC

Mini Maker faire

London’s first Mini Maker Faire will take place at the London College of Communication on the 6th July 2013. The deadline for submissions is 14th April 2013, form is here.

OpenEnergyMonitor

OpenEnergyMonitor is a project to develop open-source energy monitoring tools to help us relate to our use of energy, our energy systems and the challenge of sustainable energy. At present its possible to sense: AC Electricity (apparent power, current, voltage, real power, power factor), Temperature, Humidity Pulses (from pulse output utility meters) and Elster IrDA (direct utility meter interface). We and others are working on extending this list to include moisture, CO2 and other air quality measurements.

It's best to start by setting up the base-station so that you are ready to receive data from any sensor nodes as they are added. The current recommended base-station is a Raspberry Pi with an RFM12Pi wireless adapter board.

MySQL Connector/Arduino

Use a local database server to store data from your Arduino projects or send queries directly to a MySQL database from your Arduino sketch.

Email Guitar, Type an Email Using Guitar Strokes

David Neevel has created an email guitar that translates guitar notes into computer keystrokes, allowing the user to practice shredding while sending an email. Link to the code

BHOREAL

BHOREAL is an Open Source interface based on the Arduino platform that allows to control all types of software and hardware using a surface with RGB LED-backlit pushbuttons. Built for for multimedia applications intended for DJs, VJs, musicians, hackers and DIY creators. Support the campaign. Robofish: create your robot fish with Arduino

This fish is able to swim and recognize tank edges and obstacles. We’ll find out how we can easily create it with common insulating material and a few servo motor controlled by Arduino.

CuteUino

Only use the parts of the Arduino that you need for each project. Size of an SD card. The core Brain Module has a 16mhz clock, 'power' and 'L' LED's, installed reset resistor, and 0.1" spaced standard headers so it can be directly wired to your project with no soldering needed. DIY Arduino Pro Mini quadcopter

ExecUC took a stock V929 quadcopter and started making some crafty customizations. The main change – the control electronics were replaced by an Arduino Pro Mini (16Mhz model). He soldered all the modules on a prototyping board and, although admittedly a bit heavy, the little guy takes flight with no problem.

Among other details, an HMC5883L (magnetometer) and MPU6050 (accelerometer / gyroscope) are used as sensors. A LiPo 7.4V battery pack supplies the power. The brushed motors are controlled by pulse-width modulation from SI2302 MOSFET with added diodes. He plans to swap out the micro-controller for an ARM7 stm32F103 for extra computing power, and needs to play with the PID values to correct a slight problem he seems to be having when rotating.
