There is now a surface planer located in the woodshop (You may also hear this type of machine referred to as a jointer, as it is known in the USA - there the word 'planer' often refers to a thickness planer). The machine is used to generate a smooth and flat surface on a piece of timber, often starting from warped or rough-sawn timber. It is often followed in use by a thickness planer which produces a parallel surface on the opposite face of the board.
