This page details the training programme/ requirements for the welding equipment. The space has three types of welder - MMA (stick), MIG and TIG, each requiring a separate training session. Traditionally we have started teaching beginners with MMA, as this very manual technique teaches a lot of the fundamentals that are useful to know when using the other techniques.

The welding equipment is run and maintained by the Metalbashers.
Training sessions typically last an hour or two, and there will usually be a moderate fee to be discussed with your trainer.

Given the limited amount of time the Metalbashers can devote to training please do not anticipate that you will get training "on demand".
To arrange a session, please add your name to the waiting list below and also post in the '#Welding' channel of our [https://discord.com/channels/943237246092447794/951072714913882163 Discord Server] so that we know about it

As a start please review these two videos on basic and advanced MIG..
All inductions will stress the importance of basic housekeeping:
*Please double check that the gas is shut off if you have been using MIG or TIG
*Clean Equipment and put it away
*Report any faults observed or discovered whilst using equipment
*Clean workshop floor area
*Clean and replace tools used

All inductions will cover the same fundamental safety requirements:
*Safe Working Area
*Personal Protective Equipment
*Controls
*Heat Risk
*Visual Risk
*EMF Risk

Please do not base the planning of any project, especially academic projects for examinations, on the anticipation of getting
=MMA (Stick) Training=
MMA which is also called arc or stick welding - this broadly is for all general steel 3 mm and thicker (if you were a coded welder you would be able to do a lot of other things too).
It is used in industry particularly where you are required to weld on site. It is structurally strong, robust and uses basic consumables - ships were and are built using this technique

* Welding Training
Machines: [[Cytringan arc welder]]  ,  [[Stick Welder (GCE)]]
* Practice time
* Access to the HackSpace welding equipment at any specific point in time

We do not currently have a trainer for the MMA machines. We'd be very interested in hearing from anyone who has experience in this field and would like to come forward as a trainer!

Given the single welding station and lack of trainers, we have found that best way to get initial training for new welders, or people who are coming back to welding, is to go to the introductory welding sessions run by Adam at Can of Gas, Details here:
Training will cover:
*Weldable Materials
*Power Selection
*Choosing welding rod
*Welding Position
*Preparing a work piece
*Starting a weld
*Running a bead

Please watch the following videos before attending training:

At our request Adam will now include an additional module in his introductions which covers setup of a MIG, please make sure that you include this module when you book with him as this will not be covered at HS.

Once you have attended one of the courses we can then spend a little time to get you up and running on the work equipment.

If you feel that you have the relevant experience to start welding @ hackspace without doing the caonofgas course you will be expected to demonstrate that you know about the following without any prompting. Please do not claim that you have experience if you don't know the following as it wastes a lot of time for everybody concerned.

* Identify the correct type of gas used for the welding approach you wish to use and know why that gas should be used.
=MIG Training=
* Identify which metals are safe to weld and which are hazardous to yourself and others
MIG is a production environment tool, it is quick but in the hands of a layman is not is strong as an MMA weld (easier to get decent penetrations on MMA). MIG is easier to create a good looking weld but harder to create a strong weld but for decorative things it is often good enough - setting it up can be a challenge for the un-iniated, if you are comfortable with MMA you will know what you are looking at so will find it easier to set a MIG welder up. Again whilst you can do exotic metals you generally won't unless you are an advanced welder. MIG is currently the 'beginner' welding method at LHS, and inductions are available on a semi-regular basis.
* Know how you may be electrocuted and how you may electrocute others
* What you need to know about pacemakers
* Fit/Change and remove gas cylinders
* Fit/Change MIG wire and get it through the hose to the torch
* Fit/Change/Clean appropriate sized tips
* Adjust the welding power, wire speed and gas flow to conditions suitable for the metal and thickness of joint you wish to weld
* Use safety equipment and fire extinguishers
* And finally - weld bits of metal together!

Training will cover:
*Weldable Materials
*Power Selection
*Feed speeds
*Gas settings
*Welding Position
*Preparing a work piece
*Doing the business

The welding space can only accommodate one project at a time and its on a first-come first-served basis. There is only a limited amount of MIG welding gas provided by HS, and no Argon. You will have to provide your own gas if you want to complete any significant projects. This also includes other consumables such as electrodes, welding gloves and other protection.

Please watch the following videos before attending training:

Black Horse Workshop also offer training.

http://www.blackhorseworkshop.co.uk/course/metalwork-basics-welding-6/2015-08-27/
It is also important to wear long-sleeved, non-synthetic clothing to protect your body from UV and heat exposure. It is also highly recommended that you wear a P3 rated dust mask, such as 3M Aura 3220+ or [https://www.screwfix.com/p/jsp-flexinet-disposable-valved-mask-p3/32565 this from Screwfix] (roughly £2-4).

The notes used for Toby's training sessions are available here - [[File:Toby's MIG Training Notes r02.pdf]]. Other trainers will do something similar, but might not follow this exact plan.

=TIG Training=
TIG is good for exotics i.e aluminium , stainless and thin metals you can of course do steel to this requires mastery of setting the gas flow current setting, co- ordination some of which you will have gained from the previous two techniques  but control of a filler rod is now introduced

The care and training of this equipment is carried out by the metal working group.

Below are people who have had training on the welding equipment.
We do not currently have a trainer for the TIG machine. We'd be very interested in hearing from anyone who has experience in this field and would like to come forward as a trainer!

Training will cover:
*Weldable Materials
*Power and other settings
*Using the AC Node
*Assembling the torch and preparing the tungsten
*Gas settings
*Using the pedal
*Welding Position
*Preparing a work piece
*Joining materials
