To brew mead

Progress

  • Lots of honey collected from bees
  • Demijohns and airlocks procured
  • Equipment sterilised
  • Brewers yeast obtained
  • Bottles obtained

Ingredients

  • Honey
  • Water (tepid)
  • Orange segments
  • Tablespoon of brewers yeast

Method

  • Sterilise equipment (If you don't want to sterilise equipment, you'd better look at trying out Project:Growing_bacteria instead )
  • Heat water
  • Pour about 1/3 honey and 2/3 water into demijohn, leaving room for orange as flavouring
  • Add 1tbsp of brewers yeast
  • Add filled airlock bung
  • Wait 3 months
  • Wait more
  • Sterilise bottles and bottle
  • Drink

Observations

Mead takes ages to brew, and leaving it to naturally clarify yields the best results. Even once bottled, it matures well with age.

Advanced

Measure gravity before / after fermentation, to calculate the alcohol percentage.
