When | Every Wednesday, from 19:00 |
What | We love woodworking with hand tools |
Members | |
We are a club for people interested in woodworking, carpentry and cabinet making in London.
We meet every Wednesday evening at 7pm in the basement workshop. During the club nights, we make stuff out of wood, practice joints, such as mortice and tenon or dovetail joints, work on projects together or independently and learn new skills.
Getting in touch
If you would like to do some woodwork at the London Hackspace and use our tools, please join the PLAYWOOD google group and introduce yourself!
More information about the group will be added here in due course.
You can also follow us on Twitter for announcements and other updates: @playwood_co.
Our woodworking tools
We have huge a range of hand tools which are available to members, including saws, chisels, planes, marking out equipment, as well as the equipment of the London Hackspace.
Our initial equipment was funded by our members with a very successful pledge for woodworking tools. We are now also starting to receive tool donations by people who want to support our activities.
We now have four good quality workbenches in the basement workshop, each kitted out with vices, planing stops, and some with bench dogs. One of the benches is designated wood only, and is for precision carpentry. No glue, paint, metal working, plastic or any other activity allowed! When not used for wood working, it is covered with a piece of MDF to protect the hand-flattened and oiled hardwood bench top. Please respect it! There is storage under each of the benches which we hope to convert to permanent tool storage.
To access the tools, you need to perform an induction. You can do an induction on the Wednesday evening session at 7.15pm. See the weekly announcement on the google group for more details.
Joining the group
You should first become a member of the London Hackspace if you would like to visit more regularly. Rent in London is surprisingly expensive...
The next step is to do an induction, organised via the PL[A]YWOOD message board and then by coming along to the space at the agreed time. Often , the most convenient time is Wednesday at 7.15pm. The inductions and are run by one of the PL[A]YWOOD members on a voluntary basis. Please be nice to them!
The benefits of joining the PL[A]YWOOD group (which is free) include:
- Access to a full set of quality, well looked after Woodworking_Hand_Tools
- 5% discount at Axminster Tools
- Become part of a friendly group of fellow woodworking fans
- Join an existing project
- Learn how to sharpen, maintain and look after tools
Responsibilities of joining include:
- Treating the tools with respect
- Voluntarily 'adopting a tool'
- Helping keep the wood pile and workshops clean and tidy
Workshops
Workshops occur fortnightly on a Wednesday, and are available to all PL[A]YWOOD members. You must pre-book your place below. If you have not yet joined PL[A]YWOOD, please do so before attending a workshop.
Space is strictly limited and you must reserve a place on this wiki page when a workshop is available - watch the PLAYWOOD google group for announcements. Reserving a place is on a first-come-first-served basis, so you'll need to be quick.
If you can't attend a workshop please remove your name from the roster and inform the PL[A]YWOOD google group, this will save wasting people's time and can allow a last minute replacement to take your slot.
Next Session
11/08/17 @ 7:00pm. Project: Winding sticks. Winding sticks are a pair of pieces of parallel stock, with contrasting top edges. By placing them at either end of a piece of timber, getting down level with the tops of the sticks, and sighting over them, it's easy to see whether the timber is twisted in its length (known as being "in wind" [rhymes with "grind"]). This workshop combines parts of the planing stock square workshop and edge jointing workshop. We've got some nice contrasting utile and spanish oak that will make for a good looking end product to take home. Please note: there is a £5 charge for the stock used in this session. 5 places available (no more), please note your full name you used to join LHS.

Previous Sessions
21/06/17 @ 7:00pm. Planing up stock: using a hand plane to make a piece of rough-sawn stock square (on all 6 sides) and to the dimensions of your choosing. Very useful, given the Hackspace's lack of a jointer and thicknesser at the current time! 5 places available (no more), please note your full name you used to join LHS.

08/03/17 @ 7:00pm. Half lap joinery: while these joints aren't necessarily the prettiest, they are strong and simple, making them a workhorse behind the scenes. They're also a great gateway to learn accurate marking out techniques along with sawing and paring. 5 places available (no more), please note your full name you used to join LHS.

25/01/17 @ 7:00pm. Planing up stock: using a hand plane to make a piece of rough-sawn stock square (on all 6 sides) and to the dimensions of your choosing.
