Revision as of 12:08, 6 October 2011

This page documents projects that are causing problems for the hackspace because they're unfinished or unmaintained.

Projects which have been abandoned are liable to be thrown away or repurposed to recover the working area and the components in them. Any project can be proposed for this treatment : this page is where the progress is noted.

Procedure

A project that has been noted (marked for deletion ..) should be added to this page and the date noted. The project owner - if there is one - must respond within 1 month. The response may be one or more of :

  • Action taken towards completing the project
  • Documenting an acceptable plan to make progress on the project
  • Agreement that the project should be scrapped and a plan for disposal

If this doesn't happen, the assumption is that the project will be assigned to the 3-week bin for eventual disposal. Initially, we'll say that consensus must occur for any project to be scrapped in this way. If the procedure is found to work we may be able to make the requirements less subjective. Other interested parties may change the requirements, disposal plans etc. but this will normally cause the 1 month waiting period to be restarted.

Note that the owner is not necessarily the owner of the equipment. Some projects are the property of the hackspace. The owner is the person who initially drove the project and takes responsibility for it.

Projects needing attention

Laser cutter

Owner

None (previously Solexious because he did most of the maintenance).

Status

The laser cutter has been in a state of limited working since Solexious announced he would no longer maintain it. A number of people have made an effort to fix it, but it still has warnings attached. There is some difficulty as nobody wants to mess it up, especially as most people hope Solexious wishes to maintain it again (he did a great job .. personally I think it misses him).

Requirements

An owner is needed, taking responsibility for regular maintenance and providing continuity to repair efforts. Since the laser cutter is very important to the hackspace, the owner should function as a team leader with a documented fallback plan to cover absences.

Disposal

If no owner is found, the cutter should be sold : if not maintained it will not work, and it still has some residual value.

Stratasys

Owner

Billy

Status

The Stratasys has seen very limited progress after an encouraging start. Believed to now have all requirements except for some repairs to stepper control boards.

Requirements

Update needed to wiki to explain current situation and plan for completion.

Disposal

Glen2 has suggested reusing the mechanical part and replacing the electronics with reprap parts.

Vending machine

Owner

Solexious

Status

Progress slow since it was damaged and Solexious got busy with work

Requirements

Update needed to wiki to explain current situation and plan for completion. If the current owner does not wish to complete it, find a new owner.
