Whilst there are not specific technical requirements, any relevant experience will be an advantage, particularly an understanding of IP networks. You will certainly be reliable, hardworking and enthusiastic.

Most of your work will be within London, but occasionally you will be required to stay away from home.

Android Developer, short/flexible contract

Universal Air LLC/Ltd. is a California and Oxfordshire based autonomous robotics start-up looking for an Android developer to produce an application that serves as a configurable remote control for our electronics/robotics systems. The app involves user-configurable interface consisting of mainly buttons, sliders and data displays. The app communicates with our electronics/robotics systems via WiFi (probably UDP), and other methods also considered.

We will assist with implementing the communications protocol, and there is no specific need for the developer to design any of the graphics for the buttons and sliders, however it is important that the graphics are visually appealing, so we would like to use our own graphical elements for buttons and sliders rather than the Android default. Future work may involve selectable graphical themes, however that is not a requirement at this stage. The main task of the Android developer is to develop the interface.

We will supply the relevant hardware including an Android tablet. Rates will depend on skill level and experience of the developer. Beginner Android devs who have experience with other programming and are willing to learn/gain experience with Android are welcome to apply. Experience with electronics or robotics not necessary. The developer will work from home.

Please contact admin at universalair.co.uk

Senior Application Developer (Ruby/Rails/OS) (Full Time)

London, United Kingdom

We are looking for passionate developers with Ruby and Ruby on Rails skills, who have at least 2 years commercial experience. We are especially keen to talk to those with talents beyond the constraints of those languages, although our core functionality is currently being developed in Ruby and RoR.

The role requires a good all-rounder, someone who is willing to 'muck in' when needed and take responsibility for processes and tools when required, and someone who is keen to learn and apply new skills and techniques.

You will have knowledge of, and be at ease working with, Linux/Unix operating systems. You should be comfortable using the command line and command line tools (for deployment, etc.) as well as being not being scared of using unix text editors (like vi/emacs). Knowledge and experience with more than one language a distinct advantage (python/ruby/perl/javascript/erlang).

You will be involved in helping us to scale up and develop our platform, working with a highly skilled Agile team where code isn't code unless it's tested, applying new technologies and techniques where apporpriate, developing API's, new features, new products and core functionality.

On top of a passion for technology and a good working knowledge of Ruby and Rails Knowledge and experience with: Version Control (Git) – Agile methodology experience (TDD/BDD/XP/Scrum) – Testing (Cucumber/Rspec) - Databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) - 24x7 environment – Deployment (Chef/Capistrano) – CI (Hudson/CC/Jenkins) - High demand transactional web sites. Work-club (http://work-club.com) Prototype consultancy / Building

I'm Rich Dee, the creative tech at work-club

We're working on a project for an alcohol brand at work-club at the moment.. We want to have an event where opening of special bottles triggers various electronic events to happen (music turning on, fireworks being set off etc)

I've built a rough prototype that, when the bottle is opened, an UHF RFID tag is revealed which is sensed by a long range reader, connected via usb to a laptop, which then triggers a web page to update.

That all works ok, but the range and reliability is somewhat limited compared to what we want to achieve. I'm comfortable with the software side, and being able to trigger various things by arduino, web, remote switching of power etc. but the part of the project related to sensing of the bottle opening needs someone with more experience building electronic &/ mechanical things. I'm also wondering whether RFID is the right technical solution. I thought maybe a simple radio transmission might work better..?

We're looking for someone to consult, or preferably work with us for a while to help firm up our prototype for limited manufacture

Oh, you'll get paid money and be able to work in a nice place with lovely people and an office dog! But please don’t hang around, we need you right now!

NIB DRESS FIXING

I made this electronic garment with nibs - http://vimeo.com/24923549 - for my fashion degree graduation project. And since then I had to travel with it for a couple of shows. Unfortunately, it broke during the last move and it has be ready for another show the beginning of July. The guy I last worked with has become very busy with his own full time job so I am looking for someone that can fix it and also maybe suggest ideas to make it a lot more durable. I have very little knowledge of electronics and it would be really great if anyone might be available for this job. Or if you know someone else who might be interested in making a little bit of cash, or just generally interested in this kind of projects, please send them my way. My contact info is as below. Thank you so much. Steven e. steven@steventai.co.uk m. 07515 8080 36

Wireless Hack for Smart Phone - Building a prototype

@ ioWorld (http://ioworld.com) we develop really simple, really useful tech...

I'm currently working on a project requiring a hardware hack that's outside the scope of my own capabilities; I want to create a wireless fob that a smart phone (Android, to start with) can detect at approx. 100cm. Any protocol (inc. Bluetooth) will be ok for the POC/prototype but there is a strong commercial application for this tech, so ultimately a low-power protocol will be preferable. There has been a useful tech discussion thread on the hackspace groups channel entitled "Wireless Hack for Smart Phone" which you may want to take a look at first.

Interested? Want to find out more? Get in touch ASAP: alan@ioWorld.com NB: This is also listed on the (very empty) NonCommercial board

Web designer/developer @ dxw (http://dxw.com/)

We're a small agency who do big projects for the public sector and we're currently in startup mode building some products that we think will be very exciting, including a product for cloud-based WordPress hosting and Citrulu (http://www.citrulu.com/ - currently in alpha) for checking that live websites are working properly.

We're looking for a designer who can do some web development as well. Check the Resumator job spec for details: http://dxw.theresumator.com/apply/UIb3m7/Web-Designerdeveloper.html

Linux/Unix Sysadmin @ NetDev (http://netdev.co.uk)

We're a small (< 20 people) company based in Brighton specialising in teleco application development. We're currently looking for a creative Linux/Unix sysadmin to join an internal team of six to manage one specific VoIP conferencing platform for one of our clients. The platform runs a mixture of Open Source and proprietary tech, running on Linux. All our infrastructure is managed devops style with puppet.

To apply you need solid command line skills and at least three years experience admining Linux boxes in a commercial environment. You need to have a good understanding of what makes TCP/IP networks tick and be proficient at scripting (shell, ruby, perl or python). Knowing a few of these is a good bonus:

Database administration (Oracle 10g, Oracle TimesTen, MySQL); VOIP (SIP, RTP,
FreeSWITCH); Network sniffing and protocol analysis (tcpdump/wireshark); Java
applications (installation/tuning/troubleshooting); J2EE application servers
(Jboss); Scalability, clustering, high availability (Veritas Cluster Server);

systems (JIRA); Automated server deployment (PXE, Kickstart); Configuration
management systems (puppet); JMS messaging (ActiveMQ); CI systems
(Jenkins/Hudson); Automated testing processes and tools (Cucumber/Selenium);
Monitoring (Nagios/OpenNMS)

Don't worry if you don't know everything, we're happy to provide training where necessary. Having passion for systems and a bit of a clue are most important.

If you fancy working in a relaxed and hacker friendly environment, where everyone has a say, please get in touch. Send your CV to jane.brown@netdev.co.uk and mention that you found us through the London Hackspace.
