Projects at risk

From London Hackspace Wiki

This page documents projects that are causing problems for the hackspace because they're unfinished or unmaintained.

Projects which have been abandoned are liable to be thrown away or repurposed to recover the working area and the components in them. Any project can be proposed for this treatment : this page is where the progress is noted.

THIS PAGE IS A PROPOSAL - EXPIRY DATES ARE EXAMPLES

In particular, no attempt has been made at present to contact the owners named. The action dates are therefore not yet valid.

Procedure

A project that has been noted (marked for deletion ..) should be added to this page and the date noted. The project owner - if there is one - should be contacted and must respond by updating the page within 1 month. The response may be one or more of :

  • Action taken towards completing the project
  • Documenting an acceptable plan to make progress on the project
  • Agreement that the project should be scrapped and a plan for disposal

If this doesn't happen, the assumption is that the project will be assigned to the 3-week bin for eventual disposal. Initially, we'll say that consensus must occur for any project to be scrapped in this way. If the procedure is found to work we may be able to make the requirements less subjective. Other interested parties may change the requirements, disposal plans etc. but this will normally cause the 1 month waiting period to be restarted.

Note that the owner is not necessarily the owner of the equipment. Some projects are the property of the hackspace. The owner is the person who initially drove the project and takes responsibility for it.

Projects needing attention

Laser cutter

Owner

None (previously Solexious because he did most of the maintenance).

Status

Coolbot has been repaired and the laser cutter is restored to normal operation. Solexious remains the chief maintainer.

Requirements

An owner is needed, taking responsibility for regular maintenance and providing continuity to repair efforts. Since the laser cutter is very important to the hackspace, the owner should function as a team leader with a documented fallback plan to cover absences.

Response

Only abandoned it due to time constraints making my time at the space very limited. Happy to take up the mantle early December and work on resources to help train more people in maintence - Solexious 21:17, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Asc is pretty good with it, and has training from Sol. At the moment, it's working fine, but will need maintenance soon. Ms7821 21:20, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Calendar

  • Updated plan --Solexious 21:22, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
  • Noted 'at risk' --Artag 11:55, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
  • Action completed. No further action required.

Disposal

If no owner is found, the cutter should be sold : if not maintained it will not work, and it still has some residual value.

Stratasys

Owner

Artag/Hipster Chris

Status

The Stratasys has seen very limited progress after an encouraging start. Believed to now have all requirements except for some repairs to stepper control boards.

With various people contributing, Hipster got it working[1] and has put instructions on the wiki. Apparently still turns off periodically. Bumping up action time by 1 month. Ms7821 21:23, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Fully working with occasional bugs. Action completed, machine no longer at risk. --Artag 13:24, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Requirements

Need to show usefulness and fix periodic turning-off bug.

Calendar

  • Noted 'at risk' --Artag 11:55, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
  • Billy contacted 6.10.2011, passed ownership to artag
  • Action required by 6.11.2011
  • Hipster performed first print on 3rd November
  • Action completed. No further action required while machine remains functional.

Disposal

Glen2 has suggested reusing the mechanical part and replacing the electronics with reprap parts.

Vending machine

Owner

Solexious

Status

Progress slow since it was damaged and Solexious got busy with work

Requirements

Update needed to wiki to explain current situation and plan for completion. If the current owner does not wish to complete it, find a new owner.

Response

Will be finishing the electronics during my "Finishing projects" blitz during the week starting the 12.12.2011 --Solexious 21:30, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Trebuchet

Kitchen

Owner

Russ / Phil

Status

Making slow progress in worktops, but needs completing, especially electrical and water services sorting

Russ has requested that someone produce detailed proposals for electrics and plumbing. These can be bought out of hackspace general funds.

Response

Jonty and Phil had a chat about it on 3rd November, but I don't know what the outcome was. atom_ has offered on IRC to plumb the kitchen for us. Ms7821 21:39, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Action required by 6.11.2011

Disposal

Abandon effort, limit kitchen facilities to drinks near existing sink, reclaim room for other uses.

Trolley 2011-09-24 16.44.05.jpg

Quad trolley

Owner

Phish?

Status

Has wheels and a base.

Requirements

A purpose/direction/use.

Calendar

  • Noted 'at risk' --Ms7821 13:09, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
  • Action required by 6.11.2011

Disposal

Should be disassembled if the wheels are wanted by someone else. Otherwise, skip.

- It's been dismantled. The motors/gearing weren't that powerful. Phish is planning something else for them. The boards have been used by Antonio as a base for his CNC experiments. --Billy Smith 04:05, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Laser 2011-09-24 16.40.50.jpg

Display laser

Owner

Russ

Status

The mirrors were used once for a demonstration, but something broke. I don't think the laser itself works.

Requirements

I think this needs to justify its space. Perhaps a permanent installation for open days?

Calendar

  • Noted 'at risk' --Ms7821 13:09, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
  • Action required by 6.11.2011

Disposal

Can be sold in pieces - Russ said he expected to make back most of the cost this way.
