The tentative plan is that it will be flashing morse code in the night sky on Christmas eve. Low earth orbit means it whizzes over head for 5-15minutes then is out of range for hours. Presumably you will be able to tell when it is overhead from the usual satellite tracking websites or by listening to 437.250 MHz and 437.445 MHz. A basic scanner and good antenna will do but a receiver that does SSB, such as a funcube dongle, will be better for listening for the beacon.
